At two thousand five hundred meters and sitting between the shatubar and Gulmit glaciers, Gulmit is the place to stop if you like to walk a base for some dramatic hikes and long treks, Although its one of the oldest settlements in Hunza and Gojal, a kind of geographical curse has prevented Gulmit from growing into a town. As Shimshal valley glaciers periodically dammed the Shimshal River and broke, floods have gradually torn away Gulmit river sides.
The 1974 shishkat Nala mud slide created a lake that submerged parts of the village and choked the valley with sand and gravel. Gulmit once had nearly five times its present population, mostly on land that's no longer there. The Gulmit valley is famous for its high mountains, scenic beauty and the hospitality of its people. The valley of Gulmit presents a vivid picture of Gulmit life style. The upper Hunza river flow through its banks leaves a lasting memory on visitor's minds. Upper Hunza valley is where the Game of Polo born and is still played in its Original form. |
